- Jared Lucas

Explain the first moment or interaction that sparked your interest to try skateboarding?
— I was walking home from school one day and some of the neighbors had an old school style pvc flat bar and they were just boardsliding it and it looked so rad. Also the TMNT and the Tony Hawk video games were early influences.

What was your first skateboard setup and how did you get it?
— My first legit setup was a status board and some blank trucks and wheels. Got it at a local shop that sold boards and bikes and snowboards. Ended up working at the shop a few years later.

Where was your favorite place to skate when you first started and why?
— Just curbs around my local suburban area where I grew up. They were always close to 7-11’s and McDonald’s so we would grub and snack and skate!

Do you remember where you were when you saw your first pro? What was that interaction like?
— There were lots of local Canadian pros that I met when I was younger. I can’t remember who was the first legit pro I met. But I started skating at the park with Wade D as a grom and he influenced me in a lot of ways coming up. It’s rad how as you grow as a skater the homies who you skate with over time influence your skating.

Do you feel like that interaction motivated you to learn certain tricks or made you want to skate more like that guy/girl?
— Haha well I definitely wore some baggy shit when I was a grom skating with Wade a lot. Also a lot of trick selection stuff too... anytime you’re skating with someone who you look up to and they have an opinion on a trick chances are you’re going to listen.

How old were you when you first got sponsored? And how long had you been skating at that point?
— I first got sponsored when I was 16. I had been skating for about 3 years.

Was the goal to get sponsored or did you not have those expectations?
— There were other kids at the local park that we all skated that were sponsored so I knew it was possible. So it just happened right about the time I started really needing more boards than reasonably affordable my brother and I both got on a shop sponsor from BC, Canada called Coastal Riders.

After high school, did you further your education? If so what did you study and how many years did you go?
— Yeah I went to college and studied general studies for 2 years and got a “certificate of arts”. But was narrowing my studies towards geology and geography.

Did you go to college thinking skateboarding wasn't going to work out for you? Or was that more of a back up plan for after Skateboarding?
— I was just in college because I was just following up with a further education and I was gonna find out what I wanted to do. Honestly skateboarding never even seemed like much of an option. I just though I need to keep getting free boards as long as I could. I didn’t really have the connections in cali yet either, so in the mean time I was just going to school and skating around Vancouver with my bro and homies.

What is your all around favorite wheel? shape, size and formula.
— Well that would be my newest graphic of course haha, on some 52mm, V2 shape, STF formula.

Ryan Decenzo Interview

Favorite crew to skate with and why?
— With the Dime homies! Always good vibes, sick spots Montreal style, and mandatory brews!

If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
— With the knowledge I have now? hahaha who knows... but nah probably not.
