Explain the first moment or interaction that sparked your interest to try skateboarding?
- When I was 4 years old I saw my cousin rolling around on a board and thought it looked fun. I remember feeling free the first time I rolled on one.
What was your first skateboard setup and how did you get it?
- My first set up was a Walmart board my Grandmother got me for Christmas. After riding that for about a year straight my parents bought me a Tony Hawk Complete the following Christmas Classic Birdhouse graphic with blue Grind King trucks. I don't remember what wheels unfortunately.
Where was your favorite place to skate when you first started and why?
- When I first started I was so young I would just roll around on the concrete patio in my parents backyard trying to learn how to ollie. The more time I spent skating, my parents eventually took note and would take me to the skatepark once a week.
Do you remember where you were when you saw your first pro? What was that interaction like?
- When I was 8 years old the Birdhouse Team came and did a demo in my hometown, Kamloops. I remember seeing Birdman, Bucky Lasek, and Willy Santos. Aside from getting their autograph my biggest take away was just being in awe of how great of skateboarders they were. Our original park was so bad, Tony actually told the news it was one of the worst parks he had ever skated and yet the whole team still killed the demo.
Do you feel like that interaction motivated you to learn certain tricks or made you want to skate more like that guy/girl?
- Watching that first pro demo just drove the passion to skate even more. I mean, when you're 8 years old and a fan of skateboarding, the current big name pro's almost seem immortal to you and when you're from a smaller city where big names don't come through, seeing them skate a demo was mind blowing.
How old were you when you first got sponsored? And how long had you been skating at that point?
- I got my first sponsor at 10 years old. I got sponsored by the local shop B&B boardshop. They were the leaders of our scene and brought demos to the parks. I had I been skating for 5 years.
Was the goal to get sponsored or did you not have those expectations?
- For me my obsession with skateboarding was so strong I naturally started day dreaming of getting sponsored and not having to pay for product. Those day dreams started when I was 8 I believe. Always just skating the most beat up boards wondering how I'm going to afford another.
Growing up, did you ever have any aspirations to do anything besides skateboarding?
- It's very bizarre to say but I only ever aspired to become a Pro Skateboarder. I remember seeing that vision for myself when I was 8 years old. What truly sold me the dream was Transwolrd "Video Radio”.
When you’re not skating, how do you pass time?
- When I'm not skateboarding I'm usually at physio getting worked on, in the gym maintaining my body for future battles, or out on some bike rides. WIth 2020 being so affected by CoronaVirus, there isn't much else to do but skate so when I'm not on my board, I've been putting a lot of energy into taking care of my body because I want to skate for as long as possible.
What is your all around favorite wheel? shape, size and formula.
- I've been skating all sorts of Bones shapes for 14 years now and my favorite all around wheel is the STF 52mm V3's. Whether I'm in the parks or in the streets, the STF V3 has that key slideability that carries a shape that locks on rails and ledges really fucking good.
Favorite crew to skate with and why?
- Over the years, I've had so many good memories on our infamous Bones Camping trips no question about it! Lately, I've been on a lot of missions with the Flip crew and the energy has been real cool. Just a solid group of rippers and everyone feeds off of eachother filming. When that energy is created on a trip, that's when the magic happens!
If I could be a fly on the wall I’d like to….
- To be able to be a fly on the wall with Kobe Bryant during his reign in the NBA. Seeing the Mamba mentality first hand would be something else. May he rest in peace.
If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
- Not a damn chance.
