Explain the first moment or interaction that sparked your interest to try skateboarding?
— The first time I knew I wanted a skateboard was when I saw this guy skating down the sidewalk with a liberty spike mohawk smoking a cig, ollie up a curb and kept jamming. I thought, “that guy is living”. I immediately wanted one!
What was your first skateboard setup and how did you get it?
— My first board was the Jamie Thomas Zero Smith grind board with, Independent trucks, Bullet wheels, and Black panther bearings. Got it for my 10th birthday.
Where was your favorite place to skate when you first started and why?
— Before we got a skatepark in my hometown I liked to just skate flat ground in parking lots. Sometimes the most simple things can be the most enjoyable.
Do you remember where you were when you saw your first pro? What was that interaction like?
— I was at the local skatepark while visiting my grandma in California for the summer. And I remember Ron Whaley rolled up with a blue Mohawk nonetheless! And proceeded to do the most stylish stalefish airs in the bowl. At the end of the session he hooked me up with a set of new Krux and a DVD of the video “Blown Out”they had just dropped. Forever a memory of stoke! Thanks Ron!
Do you feel like that interaction motivated you to learn certain tricks or made you want to skate more like that guy/girl?
— Fuck yeah it did! I learned stalefish airs for sure because of seeing him do them! And Whaley flips! Dude has a great style and approach to skating.
How old were you when you first got sponsored? And how long had you been skating at that point?
— I started skating for the local shop after skating for probably 2-3 years.
Was the goal to get sponsored or did you not have those expectations?
— I mean who doesn’t like free stickers. Honestly I never thought I was good enough to get sponsored. I thought they just hooked me up because I couldn’t afford product and would ride whatever hand me down stuff I could get my hands on.
How did you get into building skateparks?
— Mark Scott, owner of Dreamland Skateparks kidnapped me when I was 18 and taught me how to work hard and scrub rock!
Do you find it challenging balancing your time skating and pouring concrete?
— Fully! Both are kind of full time gigs themselves. Your either too sore from pouring concrete to skate or too broke off from skating to want to pour concrete. But nothing good comes easy. As the late Mark Hubbard said ”workings hard not always fun”
What is your all around favorite wheel? Shape, size and formula?
— My favorite wheel is the V3 54 STF.
Favorite crew to skate with and why?
— Way too many to name but a few of the ones who get me hyped are my friend Aran , my lady Mackenzie, Kevin Kowalski, Mark Scott, Ben Krahn. I just enjoy skating with people who know how to have fun. My squad is usually whoever shows up to burnside.
If I could be a fly on the wall I’d like to..
— Have witnessed Motörhead Live.
If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
— Not a damn thing.
